Facial Dandruff: What You Should and Should Not Do

It can grow on the back of your ears, eyebrows, and the side of the nose. Facial dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, exists in the form of dry and flaky skin in the face, which is usually reddish. It can be due to some factors such as stress, oiliness, and yeast infection called Malassezia.

Effects on Skin

Brian J. Williams, M.D., from a top skin treatment center in Salt Lake City, notes that facial flaking is rarely a serious condition. It can, however, cause embarrassment and anxiety. This is mainly because of how it makes the skin look. In mild cases, it manifests in small patches of flaky skin. If the facial dandruff is not treated and becomes worse, a rash may develop with some patches of red and oily skin. These patches may occur in different areas and usually are itchy.

More Than Just Dry Skin

It is important to note that flaky facial dandruff is not just dry skin. You cannot easily treat it by applying more moisturizer on the face or using bars soaps with moisturizers. Doing so will only aggravate the condition. Sometimes, facial dandruff makes the skin sensitive, which will then require gentler care. It is best not to wash frequently using harsh soap. It will only irritate the skin.

Wash with the Right Products

When it comes to washing your face, it is advisable to use something that can control the growth of yeast. Experts usually suggest using products with zinc pyrithione. You may also use anti-dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole or selenium sulfide on the areas in your face affected with dandruff. Just be sure not to use anti-acne or anti-aging products, which can further irritate the area.

The best advice, of course, is to see a dermatologist. Expert guidance can help you treat the problem accordingly and manage your condition. Seeing a dermatologist will also let you know if you’re dealing with facial dandruff or other kinds of skin problems.
