You may have a special occasion coming up—an anniversary with your other half, or the birthday of a family member or a good friend. If you have no idea what to give as a present, you may consider custom jewelry as a possible gift. Investing effort and creativity into a present is perhaps one of the best and greatest gifts you can give to anyone.
A four-step masterpiece
There are a number of jewelers who accept orders for custom jewelry. Utah is but one city where these shops abound.
The process for custom designed jewelry generally follows four steps:
The first step is to sketch the design of what you envision your piece to be. In this step, you can communicate your ideas to the jeweler. You can also turn in your personal sketches of the jewelry you want. Looking at current jewelry design trends may also inspire you.
Next is the computer-aided design (CAD) drawing. This is when the jeweler refines the sketch into a better image of the item you want. Once finished with the drawing, the jeweler sends the CAD images to you for approval.
After you approve the images, the jeweler moves on to the wax replica step. The jeweler will hand carve or print a wax replica of the design. It is important to note that some jewelers skip the CAD phase and move on to doing the wax replica directly.
The final step is the setting. The jeweler will work with your chosen materials, such as metals and gemstones, and fashion them into the piece you want.
When all is done, you need only to wrap your custom designed jewelry and give it to that special someone you had in mind. A present as precious as custom jewelry is something that will be treasured and remembered forever.
